When is the last time you have been rebuked and corrected by someone other than your wife or mom?

I was rebuked the other day by a man I had just met!

I was called out on my laziness as a husband. I was reminded of my role as the spiritual leader. I was told that God could take it all away just as easily as he gave it to me. This rebuke was Holy Spirit lead and the reason I know this is because it hit me at the deepest part of my soul. It caused a Godly sorrow that moved me to repentance.

For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death. – 2 Corinthians 7:10

I knew this man was right. God used this man like a surgical knife on my heart, cutting deeper than I have ever been cut.

I can’t even remember the last time I have ever been openly rebuked like this. Even though it embarrassed me. Even though It broke me. It was Good!

He whose ear listens to the life-giving reproof Will dwell among the wise – Proverbs 15:31

I have always desired to be a wise man and husband, and the only way to gain wisdom is by doing what the bible says. If I allowed my heart to harden and get defensive I would have been foolish and would have missed out on this God inspired reproof. I want to be a great husband who exemplifies the image of God.

Thank you god for loving me enough to discipline me. Make me more like Your son.

For those whom the Lord loves He disciplines, And He scourges every son whom He receives. – Hebrews 12:6

If you want to grow and mature as a man and a husband than don’t run or hide from rebuke, but welcome and heed it. Find friends that are willing to lift you up and rebuke you when its needed. Find friends that welcome the same from you. This is the essence of what it says in Proverbs 27:17

As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.
